Originaly designed as a land-based, long-range anti-submarine warfare petrol aircraft, the P-3′s mission evolved in the late 1990′s and early 21st centure to include surveillance of the battle space, either at sea or over land. It can view the battle space and instantly provide information to ground troops, especially the United States Marines. The P-3C has advanced submarine detection sensors such as directional frequency and ranging sonobuoys and magnetic anomaly detection equipment. The avionics system is integrated by a general purpose digital computer that supports all of the tactical displays, monitors and automatically launches ordnance and provides flight information to the pilots. The P-3C can carry a mixed payload of weapons internally and on wing pylons.

@starbucks107 haha good answer are you a fellow aw or nfo or pilot? just curious. with regards awoan
Funny you should mention your NJROTC instructor. My NJROTC instructor was also a Cdr. who few P-3s
My dad…VP4, VP8 and VP11. TACO/NAV. Thanks for posting. (Pakistan and many other countries have P3s in use. Its a well known fact, in fact, one of my father’s tours involved training Saudi navy officers how to operate them.
@starbucks107
i fail to see how that’s espionage. The way you are talking to me, you sound like a civilian only. Havent even been near one of these things. So basic tech specs and info can not be mistaken as ”espionage”
i’m sorry that you felt the need to get overly emotional in your reply. I find it touching. As for the rest of your post, no need to comment on it or dig too deep as it is hardly relevant here.
@mOsmetana Hi…Those sonobouys are still left in the water after the AW’s and TACO fall asleep! That’s why the Navy has submarines. They use a hook-net system to “reel-em-in!”
@aa2398a Ali No Problem…Sure It would be my Pleasure to be a TRAITOR to my Country and commit Espionage Here…On Fucking You Tube! Look Ali, you sound like a nice guy. Go find “Jane’s Fighting Ships and Airplanes” Or better yet call 800-225-5324. There are some Real Nice Guys with ties who wants to meet you Ali! Ask them “any” question about U.S. National security or intelligence gathering involving Our Newest Anti-Sub Recon Plane!
My platform 1976-1980, SS-2 OP, CAC-5, VP-45 NAS JAX. Best of times (Italy, Crete, Germany, England, Spain, Azores etc), worst of times ( Pres. Carter).
@starbucks107
sir, Pakistan navy also operates these aircrafts….tell me what are the chief differences between the ”standard” Orion versus the newly upgraded latest block versions (P-3C)? How many are still active in the US, and how many have been phased out and replaced by the P8?
any info you could provide, sir, would be most appreciated!!!!
regards
Ali from Pakistan
FYI this is not all P-3, there are CP-140 Aurora pictures in here too. Same airframe, different sensors.
@tesenki They are lost to sea
Just watched the video. Brought back memories of VP-48 from 1966-1968. Transitioned from the flying boats at North Island to the P-3s at Moffett Field. Wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.
THOSE WERE GREAT DAYS! I NEVER HAD SO MUCH FUN AS IN THE U.S. NAVY ON A P-3B AND THEN A “CHARLIE” (P-3C). AT 5:06 THAT LOOKED LIKE MT. ETNA VIA SIGONELLA. THE NATIONAL BIRD OF ITALY…FLIES! ONE WAS ISSUED ONE FLY SWATTER. THE OLD BARRACKS WERE A 15-20 BUS RIDE DOWN TO THE AIRFIELD. THEN EVERYONE REMEMBERS THE “WAIT” AT THE RAILROAD X-ING! IT COULD BE ONE MINUTE OR ONE HOUR…WHO KNEW? ANYONE REMEMBER THE BENNY BOYS OR TINA? TINA HAD AN AWARD FROM THE GERMAN (WWII) ARMY! YES…THAT ARMY!
wonderful video and music. can some one tell me what music is playing?
@cloudbase1 we found one on the beach in Alaska
@cloudbase1 I even saw a picture of one that failed to sink and next to it is a Russian submarine at the surface with a “diver” being sent in to retrieve it.
VP- 28 Hawian warriors – Barbers point , Hawaii – P3 A’s – decomissioned in ’69 – then on to VP-40 – Moffett Field , Ca. – - – - seems like two or three life times ago !
I couldn’t stand being stationed at that crappy base in that crappy town !!
@m0smetana my dad was head of the vp-48 corrosion/paint shop in the late 70′s
Server issues? The presentation is very choppy. All other videos are smooth (not my isp). VERY exciting to watch my old squadron in action (VP-8) I was there for the 1987 split deployment – Bermuda/Lajes. Keep em flying, Tigers!
They are left in the water. Tons of them at the bottom of the med.
@m0smetana Hi, does the Navy pick up those sonobuoys after use or just simply leave in the water?
cheers
bravo zulu! VP-90 89-93
Very cool. I spent 4 years as an AW in VP-48. End of the Viet Nam Era and Cold War Games. Lots of Fun
@juxong
I was in VP-48 from ’72-’76. I understand the squadron was disestablished in ’91
